The Dalit Agitation over Supreme Court Judgement

We were cut off from news today since net services were off all day in our district in view of the dalit agitation. but late last night i read this news

I commented below it in the newspaper : I have worked with the bureaucracy - across our country, officials are afraid to discipline or demand efficiency from scheduled caste staff who threaten putting a case against them under the erstwhile act – which before this Supreme Court judgement would have resulted in immediate arrest even pending investigation. The supreme court has taken the right step and the BJP government should have engaged the scheduled caste organizations rather than file a review petition.

We want to see Dalit resurgence - but taking a cue from violent Jat and Gujjar agitations is shameful because of the rapes of women and thousands of crores of damage to public and individual’s properties that some of these agitations incurred. The BJP & Congress governments’ agreeing to illegal and illegitimate demands from such agitations is also shameful.

As this news article makes clear, we all need to do more to include Dalits alongside us in all the opportunities that india has to offer. We need to ask ourselves if we make the effort – eat alongside them when an opportunity arises ? Invite them to our home and be gracious ? Be as supportive as we can be when we come across the state of their stark poverty and hunger ?

As the article above shows, there are clearly groups who at the moment feel lesser if the Dalits live more like us. We need to talk to the children from such groups especially. The government – and well-meaning people, need to make more interventions, in schools, panchayats, village fairs etc. There is a great role waiting there for social media campaigns via advertising.

Early today morning, someone said that opposition parties were orchestrating the dalit led violence. See this news article - only Punjab took stringent measures to not permit violence while the BJP ruled states – viz., UP, MP, Gujarat, Haryana and Rajasthan did not. Does not that tell you who wants violence to happen in the name of Dalits ? As one more way of divide and rule – BJP knows nothing else unfortunately.
